The plan tier decides what happens to your conversations

Claude's consumer product (claude.ai) and the Anthropic API are separate worlds. For the API, inputs are never used for training. For consumer Claude, the picture changed in 2025: free and Pro users are now asked to choose whether their chats can be used to improve models, and the answer depends on what you selected at the prompt. If you don't remember choosing, assume your setting may not be what you want and check it.

Practical implications

• Output ownership sits with you, subject to the Usage Policy. Claude output used commercially is fine; using it to build a competing LLM is not.
• Anthropic enforces its Usage Policy more conservatively than some competitors around high-risk categories — review it before building anything in a regulated or sensitive domain.
• For team or company use where conversation privacy matters, Claude for Work / Enterprise does not train on your data by default; the consumer tier is the wrong tool for confidential material.

When to choose it

Pick consumer Claude for individual research, writing, and coding assistance. The moment confidential business data is involved, move to the API or an Enterprise plan — not the free consumer tier.
